"Neither Small nor Selfish" is a political satire piece that Brown made for the Akron Beacon Journal during World War II. It is a criticism of the United States being involved in WWII. Brown’s insider view of governmental functions came from his previous military involvement; he was in the Ohio State Militia and obtained the rank of Sargent Major. World War II is known as the biggest deadliest war in history, and involved more than thirty countries, so political satire pieces were not in short supply.
