| Daniel Webster Brown (Web Brown) was born in Akron, Ohio in 1876. He was the son of Daniel Wilson Brown and Clara C. (Hardy) Brown. Web Brown was only eighteen months old when his mother passed away and he went to live with his mother’s parents.
Brown joined the Ohio State Militia and obtained the rank of Sargent Major and eventually in April of 1898, he became a part of the Cuban Spanish-American War, which lasted until December of 1898.
He studied architecture and science while he attended Buchtel College (Akron University). While he was at Buchtel College he became a cartoonist for the Akron Democrat in Stark County. Brown was also the cartoonist for the Cleveland Press for about a year during this time. He moved to Boston, Massachusetts and was the cartoonist for the Boston Post for eighteen months. Brown moved back to the Summit County area and for four years was the cartoonist for the Youngstown Telegram and then the Youngstown Vindicator.
Eventually he was the advertising manager for the Republic Rubber Company and stayed there for about nine years.
Starting in the early 1920’s Brown was the political cartoonist for the Akron Beacon Journal and his employment there lasted for twenty-five years.
