Shigaraki pottery is made in Shigaraki, Japan, one location of the "six old kilns" - the places where Japanese Pottery took its origin. By firing in wood-firing kilns, warm, reddish hues can be achieved. Because of this, glaze is rarely used, and instead the glaze occurs naturally in the kiln. In the 1960s and 1970s, in order to adapt to consumer demands, potters at Shigaraki began to make planters and flower vases. This is an example of a piece made from the earth to bring nature indoors.
