Laessig painstakingly applied and ironed off layers of wax and thin acrylic paint to synthetic cloth to make impressionistic backgrounds. Then he painted foregrounds of flowers, bugs, spiders' webs, birds' nests and more. He worked at a flat desk and consulted a wealth of wildflowers and photos for images.
