Preyer specialized in extremely detailed still lifes, such as this one, and looked back to Dutch Old Master paintings, even using similar “vanitas” (symbolic) motifs, such as the bee on the table, and the inclusion of bubbles: symbols of life’s fragility. His still lifes were much sought-after and appreciated during his lifetime for their precision and careful detail work.
Preyer frequently depicted windows in the reflections of his glassware, sometimes with his portrait.
