Kruseman was an artist of Romanticism, focusing on the feeling of a work, conveying emotion and passion. Romanticists used a palette of earth tones and neutrals to depict the sublime power of the natural world. Kruseman’s favorite landscapes were winter scenes, as seen here. He captured the
beauty and power of nature by depicting tiny human gures amongst the great expanse of a landscape. Each small group of gures in the work tells a story of its own in neutral colors against the soft pink sky, though the landscape commands the attention in all its glory.
