Angela Corona is a ceramic artist from Mata Ortiz, a small village in Mexico famous for its pottery. Mata Ortiz artisans create pottery inspired by the ceramics found in the nearby ancient ruins of Paquime, a community that existed during the 13th and 14th centuries.
Corona’s favorite subjects for her work are animals, specifically lizards and owls. The inspiration from Paquime is evident — Paquime ceramists produced painted vessels — all highly decorated with geometric design — depicting macaws, owls, snakes, badgers, fish, lizards, and mountain sheep. The images often are detailed enough that the animal species can be identified.
