Benton believed that the American people needed to be reminded of their strengths, and his artwork depicted nostalgic rural American life in the Midwest. He said, “I have wanted more than anything else to make pictures, the imagery of which would carry unmistakably American meanings for Americans and for as many of them as possible.”
