Alice Schille, a Columbus, Ohio artist, adapted her style to each area of the United States that she visited. Her various styles lend themselves to the area that she paints, giving that location a specific feeling. "White Houses," for example, is bathed in bright colors and spotted patches of sunlight, giving the feeling of warmth and energy.
"White Houses" also has the unofficial title of "Gloucester Street" because this painted row of houses sits on a street in Gloucester, Massachusetts. Schille followed other Ohio painters to Gloucester, such as Frank Duveneck and John Twachtman. The street depicted in "White Houses" is called Middle Street and is a row of historic houses from 1750. Though the street has changed somewhat since Alice Schille painted it, it still retains much of its historic charm.
