Donald Williams was born in Youngstown, Ohio in 1942. His parents were David and Mattie Williams. Williams married Sheila Jackson Williams in 1971.
Williams won several awards in high school for his art, but when he attended Youngstown State University he majored in Business Administration. He started taking elective courses in art and after a few art courses he never turned back. On his style, Donald said:
“When I first started painting seriously, I was developing in two directions. One was a Pop style; the second direction was a minimal style. I slowly grew away from Pop and continued to go into more abstractions. I started to tighten my style into a sort of Olitski’s type field painting on slightly irregular shaped canvases. The painting that I submitted to your Fourth Annual Show is typical of what my paintings grew into. At this point in my development I was becoming closer to my work: my paintings are me, and I am my paintings.
As an artist know yourself. Have a feeling not only in your mind, but in your gut that what you are doing is right. And no matter how many shows you are rejected from, and how much ridicule you may receive, stick with what you believe in. Don’t ever let art be a drag. If it becomes boring, get out. Do something else. But don’t create art. You’re only cheating yourself, and the world.”
