Bart Walter has been a full-time sculptor for three decades and is known for his unique and dynamic approach to the surface. He works from his personal drawings, clay and wax field studies. Bart Walter travels extensively to pursue honest interpretations of his subjects. He has a deep commitment to the natural world and this is reflected in his body of work. He captures the spirit of the animal he is sculpting.
Walter states: “in my mind’s eye, I strip away all that is unnecessary, even as I build the sculpture with layer upon layer of clay. My goal is a distillation of the subject until only true essentials are left. If in so doing I can reveal some intangible spirit, make evident the soul of my subject, and communicate this in my art, then I have accomplished something real”.
“When I am in Africa creating a study in wax, the animal in front of me is lean and fit. I see first-hand the way the creature lives. This direct contact becomes an extraordinary advantage when I am back in the studio. I can rely on the full host of my memories. I smell the scent of the grass and the dust in the air; I remember how the sun felt and how strong the breeze was. All these things come together to help me breathe life into my work”.
Walter maintains a studio in Westminster, Maryland.
