Sue Wall, a Cleveland native, graduated from Ohio University with a Masters in Fine Art, but her true interest in architecture has surfaced in most of her work.
Her paintings have been described as architectural studies. Wall has said, “I deal with recognizable images that people can relate to on different levels. I look for things others would not see; I try to accent the deterioration of the buildings and show the beauty in it. Simplification is the key to my painting and my life”.
Doorways play an important part in many of her works. “A doorway implies an element of mystery, a suggestion of internal space." Figures are absent from all her work. “I leave them out purposefully. I want to create a surrealist eeriness, an isolated moment that is not alive, and absolutely still."
