Gretchen Wachs currently lives and works in New Mexico. She has worked in clay since 1978, in addition to working with monotypes, intaglio prints and paintings.
Wachs says, “over the years, my work has found expression in large sculptural forms with bold painted (glazed) surfaces. Ideas stirred up in my paintings and print-work find their way onto the clay. Surfaces are intriguing and exciting to me. Often the weaving of patterns and textures seems to reference the natural world, rocks or rusty metal. Sometimes they are purely abstract. I guess one of the things I love about both printmaking and ceramics is process. There is so much that happens that is not in my control. It teaches me to stay open and available to life’s surprises. Art is about practice; it’s about being awake and connected. It’s a place from which to explore and question and create some magic”.
