Born in 1941 in Surrey, England, Brinsley Tyrrell attended the Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts at the University of London, where he received a major grant from the Middlesex Country Council, and earned his intermediate degree in Fine Arts in 1961 and a National Diploma in Design with a major in Sculpture and a minor in terracotta in 1964.
When he was a young man he traveled with his wife and two children to the United States and spent some time in Manhattan. While living in Manhattan he received a job offer from Kent State University for a year. Traveling back to England his wife stated: “You really liked America, didn’t you?” And she asked “Why don’t you try looking for another job?” Tyrrell came back to the States and when Kent State heard he was looking for a job – they hired him.
Tyrrell states that “My kids are here and my grandkids are here, so I guess I’m staying. I do like it (Ohio), though the winters are a bit too long.”
Primarily a sculptor, Tyrrell mainly works in clay, wax, plaster, bronze, wood or stone. Tyrrell once said, “I have always drawn, but it was not until my wife Lilian and I bought our old farmhouse that I started to take drawing seriously,” he says. “To my surprise, I produced a large number of pastel drawings exploring my feelings for the surrounding land.”
Tyrrell is an Emeritus Professor of art at Kent State University.
