Born in Texas, James Swann learned about printmaking at Sul Ross College. After graduation, he worked as a commercial artist and manager of an engraving company.
In 1932, he was an officer in the Dallas Print and Drawing Collectors Society and was producing many etchings. Two years after a visit to the Century of Progress Exposition in 1933, Swann apprenticed to the Chicago printmaker, Morris Henry Hobbs. There he became an active member and officer of the Chicago Society of Etchers. Swann’s participation with this society and the Prairie Print Makers provided him with important professional contacts. In 1955, he opened a gallery in his home, which supported the art he loved.
Swann traveled extensively exhibiting his own work, advising collectors and searching for new acquisitions.
