Susanne Stephenson was born in 1935. She attended Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. Susanne had the opportunity to work with Maija Grotell while she achieved her MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan.
Stephenson spent a year studying ceramics in Japan in 1962. A sabbatical from Eastern Michigan University in 1973 gave her the opportunity to go to Spain to study hard lusters.
“The thing that interests me in change”, claims Stephenson. “I am interested in things that look one way and turn into something else”. Janet Koplos, editor for New Arts Examiner stated: “It is a strong balance that in its inexactness may suggest a little of Stephenson’s temperament. Even when her color was hard-edge she was not a precisionist. She jokes about never being able to get things even or to continue a line all the way around a pot."
Her husband, John, suggests, the energy of the work reflects her personal energy, perfectly exemplified, he thinks, by her enjoyment of disco roller skating at midnight—going around in circles.
