Carol Snyder is a Columbus, Ohio based artist who received her B.F.A in Ceramics from the Columbus College of Art and Design in 1985. She works strictly with high fired, unglazed porcelain - first by throwing it on the wheel and then hand carving it. Porcelain is not easy to work with, but that's what Carol likes about it. She enjoys the challenge that porcelain presents and likes pushing its limitations, calling it an extraordinarily fragile yet strong medium. She described "Linear Balance" as “An interpretation of the layering of meadows across the countryside.” In fact, all of Carol's pieces are influenced by the time she spends hiking and cycling in nature. She expands upon this by saying:
"Each piece begins as a vessel thrown on the potter's wheel. The repetitive, centering motion of the wheel is a process that mirrors the peace and centering I experience in nature. In many cases, I work from sketches so that details can be condensed and abstracted instead of becoming a literal depiction. My influence is patterns and textures that I experience in nature. Most pieces speak of a particular place or experience that I have had. My goal is to manifest the sense of calm and peace that I find in the natural world."
