Joan Hang Smith Guthrie remains a mystery in our files.
She won her first award ‘Outstanding Ceramics Sculpture’ in 1948 from the Museum at the age of 20 for a clay seal titled “Mr. Pomp”. At that time she specialized in animals. She is a graduate of Lehman High School and the Cleveland School of Art. The last letter we received from her along with a donation of the “Zebra” was from Boggs, Wyoming. She indicated in this letter that the return address was good until November of 1983. In 1998, we completed an appraisal of the ceramic collection and with this appraisal research was conducted on the artist’s biography of which nothing could be located on Guthrie.
We would love to talk with her to gather more information. Since she is from Canton – perhaps she still has family here or friends – if so would you please contact us if you know how to reach her?
