Leslie Shiels grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio and has been painting for most of her life. She received a BFA from the University of Cincinnati’s College of Design, Art, Architecture, and Planning in 1974. Art critics have described her paintings as lush, powerful, and skillful works of art. She uses painting as a vehicle to solve problems as they relate to life experiences. Leslie has traveled and painted in many locations, with some of her favorite spots being France, Colorado, and Connecticut.
"Party of Two" is one work in a series that Leslie calls the "Cultural Connection Series," a series that combines first and third world cultures, threading together their eras, cultures, and people. Leslie states that she was painting the answer to a question - What is a common language that spans centuries and oceans? In response, she appropriated cultural patterns, images, and symbols, causing them to exist side by side regardless of their time period or geographic location.
In "Party of Two," Leslie describes one of the symbols:
"The swan above the head of a trend setting model from a NY Times magazine fashion shoot is a reference to Leda, who was visited by Zeus in the form of a swan and bore Pollux and Helen."
Leslie currently resides in Indian Hill with her husband Buck and works out of her studio on Findlay St. in downtown Cincinnati. |
