Sigmund Shawkey was born April 15, 1914, in Cleveland, Ohio. He lived with his wife, Irene, in the North Hill district in Akron.
He was a captain for the 39th Engineer Combat Group in World War II and fought through the minefields of the Anzio beachhead in Italy, for which he received four medals.
Shawkey enjoyed a 33 year-long career as a graphic designer for Firestone Tire and Rubber Company before retiring in 1980. In addition to his recognition as a graphic designer, he won hundreds of awards as a professional artist. His works encompassed a broad spectrum of media, including acrylic paintings, collages, watercolor, pen and ink, chalk and mixed media combinations.
Shawkey died December 12, 2000, in Spring Hill, Florida.
