Brad Schwieger was influenced at a young age by the work of his brother making pottery. His work is also inspired by nature and architecture. He has a degree in printmaking, but the medium of choice for him is clay.
Brad Schwieger’s work is always changing with his experiences. As a Professor of Ceramics at Ohio University, his works have been featured in many publications and he has given numerous workshops at over 60 universities. He said: “Form is the most essential element in my work. My secondary focus is to develop different types of surfaces that will enhance and support the form. I have explored surface by continuous testing of ceramic materials, kiln design, kiln construction and firing."
On the piece “Yellow Vase” Schwieger made the following comments: “The work was inspired by an interest in both pottery and architecture. I’m interested in the passage through the object. What will you find on the other side? I imagine myself walking down a city block with buildings towering on each side of me. While I allude to very large scale, I’m still interested in the finger touch print of the potter”.
