Margaret McDonald Phillips was born in New York City, studied at Hunter College, Grand Central School of Art and with the Wayman Adams School of Portraiture. She also studied at the University of Paris and received a PHD from St. Andrew’s College in Scotland. Phillips became the head of the portrait-painting department at the New York Phoenix School of Design.
Phillips is best known for the portrait painting which included the subjects Indira Gandhi and the former President Richard M. Nixon. She was also known for her portraits of cats, many commissioned by friends.
