Miska Petersham was a native of Woodstock, New York. His parents were illustrators of children’s books, Among their published books are “The Christ Child”, “The Mickey Book Series” and “The Rooster’s Crow”.
Petersham received his BFA in sculpture from the Cleveland Art Institute and his MFA from Syracuse University. From 1957 to 1973, he taught ceramics at Kent State University, founding their glass program and becoming Chairman of their Design and Crafts Division. He then became Chair of the Art Department at the University of Montana.
Petersham and his wife, Doris, resided in many countries while working as field experts in ceramic and textile projects for both CARE International and United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). They both served in the United States Peace Corps in the Fiji Islands in the late 70s. In the late 80s and early 90s, Petersham spent a number of years in Micronesia, Haiti, Kenya and Tanzania as a research and design consultant. |
