Born in 1916, Jane Parshall had an impressive background. She earned her BA in Art Education from Western Reserve University in Cleveland, along with a diploma from the Cleveland Institute of Art. She went on to receive a Master's from Western Reserve and studied ceramics for a summer at Cranbrook Academy under Maija Grotell.
Parshall was an art teacher at Akron City Schools who later left in 1959 to become a full time potter. She opened her pottery studio in Akron, Ohio. From the 1960s on she often partnered with with Denis Chasek, another potter who she shared her studio with in Akron. She used two kilns - a gas one for reduction firing and electric for general use.
Parshall once said that she owed her technical knowledge to Dr. McVay, Professor of ceramic technology at the University of Alabama. "Dr. McVay personally and informally taught me clay and
glaze technology," she said. |
