Elmer Novotny in his own words: “Like most children, I painted and drew at a very early age with perhaps but one significant difference. The materials I used were of a much more sophisticated nature, because of the fact that my father was a self-taught artist, and I frequently used materials of his for my childish efforts…
I became interested in people as subject matter at an extremely early age and did my first portrait for commission at the age of 13 for which I received a grand sum of $50.00…My complete interest in people has kept this interest alive over the years, and I’ve always considered portraiture as a fine art and not a commercial venture..Though I might be considered a realist, I feel that my biggest efforts are given toward the juxtaposition of shape to shape, line to line, and color to color working once again toward that ultimate goal of the synthesis of form and content, wherein the form enhances the idea.
Thought my paintings in most cases have a highly realistic quality, that are not naturalistic in the sense of being imitative, and my tastes in art range the entire gambit of the visual arts. I have found it possible to embrace most movements and many of which are far removed from my personal output, but I feel very strongly that a person must work from his own personal point of view, one that will satisfy his sense of rightness and best express his inner feelings.”
