Can you believe this baseball glove is made of stoneware clay, iron oxide pigment, alkyd resin, beeswax stain? Does it not look like someone just left it out on the baseball field when they were done playing?
Sculptor Richard Newman describes his work with this comment: “When we were both young, my baseball glove and I were practically inseparable. I created leather-like illusions of these sensual, American icons in clay.”
He worked with stoneware clay, creating a basic contour that is carved, shaped and detailed to add the illusion of stitching, wrinkles, laces and knots. It is kiln fired, then stained to achieve the appearance of leather.
Newman no longer creates these iconic images, in fact he only created a small number of gloves of which the museum is excited about having in their permanent collection.
