Christopher Meyer was born in Richmond, Virginia in 1947. He states the following about “Bass Enters Chair, Porgy Observes”:
“In this Mouse series I have explored some personal interests, sheltering them behind a happy-go-lucky persona, the Mouse. Most of us are familiar with this character of irrepressible charm and good spirits, always able to bounce back from any adversity. For the most part I feel that we too can be as resilient as the Mouse, as well as sharing his non-attachment to achievement and rewards. This Mouse is a most humble character.
If it captures the feeling I want, then I have succeeded with myself. If observers can make sense of it, or at least get a laugh, then the work speaks. Another function of humor is as a vehicle for making
human experience, as in nervous laughter or biting sarcasm, to hide a wide variety of fear and anxiety. The Mouse ends up as a safe mouth piece and, in many ways, shows avenues for overcoming the insurmountable. Certainly this is a heroic figure.
The toyness that comes from working in this scale is important. It creates a Lilliputian atmosphere, many times removed from our own fumbling scale. Materials also help to ensure irony, particularly since bronze is the same material that famous generals and war horses of all sorts have been entombed in for the last few thousand years. Now it is the vehicle for mousiness, true poetic justice."
