Tony Menzer received his BFA in Studio Art at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and his MFA at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. He attended workshops by Jack Earl, Richard Notkin and Don Reitz.
Menzer was known for his work with crystalline glazes. There are two types of crystalline glazes. The more common, macrocrystalline, has large crystal cluster embedded in or on the surface of the glaze; the second type, called aventurine, has single crystals often small suspended in the glaze which catch and reflect the lights.
In 1994, Menzer stopped selling and producing ceramics commercially. He originally sold his ceramics through craft catalogs and at Macy’s. His current mediums are screen printing and computerized embroidery. In addition to his artistic pursuits, Menzer is involved in the music business. Menzer had been playing bass guitar for over 45 years – formerly with Otis and the Alligators, Daddy Whiskers, Dave Steffen Band, Masters of the Stratocasters, Westside Andy and Friends featuring Clyde Stubblefield, Perry Weber and the Devilles. Menzer also creates and books festivals such as “Big Bull Falls Blues Festival” in Wausau, River of Blues in Wisconsin Rapids, “Clocktower Bluesfest” in Rockford, Illinois, and Feel Good Festival in Portage County.
Menzer said: “Actually I am still waiting for my high school guidance counselor to call to let me know what to do with my life. In the meantime we shall do the Blues”.
