Born in Frost Prairie, Arkansas in 1925, Paul Maxwell is recognized as a sculptor, painter and printmaker in several media. It is especially interesting that Maxwell invented and patented his own printmaking medium, an acrylic casting process by which he achieves unusually heavy relief designs on paper and other surfaces.
Many of Maxwell’s paintings are also quasi sculptures. The artist speaks of their topography almost as if they were literal landscapes. Also, overtones of a metaphysical nature seem to emanate from Maxwell’s work. In many cases, everything is so ordered that it suggests some kind of mathematical or scientific basis for their design. Even without there being any obvious symbolism, one often feels there is meaning beyond the purely visual – something more than meets the eye.
Such feelings gain support from some of the things Maxwell says about his art and art in general: “Art involves sight and insight. While an artist is making something to look at which is objective and tangible, he is seeing through and beyond it to a focal point of mind and spirit, whose substance is perhaps best reflected in the attitude of his work. I want my work to wear the faces of serenity and joy and poise. To me, my works are celebrations of order. Even when I use an economy of means, I hope the piece will evidence the support of all the technical skills and knowledge and love of creating… I have no desire to copy what is already visible, but I want my work to make visible what would otherwise remain unseen.”
