From Nancy Stewart Matin (About Magazine – August 1, 2011):
"I was with the Hoover Co. for 32 years. It occurred to me that I should have some interest or hobby for retirement and so I started dabbling with watercolor. And dabble it was. I would paint awhile and then chase other butterflies.
While I worked, I was one of the original volunteers at the Battered Women’s Shelter, and then I moved on to the Rape Crisis program with the American Red Cross. I became chairman of the board of the Red Cross for three years after my retirement. I always had the compulsion that I needed to give back.
Art was always of great interest as well. When I became the sole caretaker for my husband, I was housebound with him many times. I had the choice of soap operas or painting. The painting won out, and I became good and began winning awards in shows. I am basically self-taught.
The next progression was teaching art, which I have enjoyed for the past 11 years. I have some students who have been with me most of that time, and they constitute my Monday night class that I hold in my home and call the Salon. One of my students, Russ Hench, accuses me of “yammering” at them but I am so enmeshed in art history, if I consider Matisse a personal friend, I think they should also. I also teach a hands-on class at the North Canton Library, and my current group has astonished me."
