Arne Lindmark was born in Poughkeepsie, New York in 1929, of Swedish emigrant parents. He is a lifelong resident of the Hudson River Valley and is an award-winning artist. Until his recent retirement, Lindmark made the daily commute by train to New York City where he worked for 38 years as an illustrator for an advertising agency. (He was the illustrator for the team that developed the Folger’s coffee campaign “The best part of waking up is Folgers in your cup” and Chiffon Margarine’s “You can’t fool Mother Nature”) He used his time on the train for inspiration. “Most people would be on the train and pull out the “New York Times”. I looked out the window and saw different things all the time. There’s just so much to see. Even the most mundane things can inspire you”.
Lindmark equates his approach to composing a painting to that of a musician scoring a symphony. The process must be the same one where the artist/composer carefully orchestrates subtle and bold excitement with textures and values, shapes and colors, culminating in a visually pleasing fest for the eye. Just a lyricist puts words to music; Arne with paint and paper captures in brush strokes his personal glimpses of images along life’s way.
Lindmark studied at Pratt Institute of Technology in New York City. He is a member of the American Watercolor Society and an elected member of the National Academy of Design. He currently is painting and conducting workshops in the Hudson River Valley.
