Charles Lakosfky was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and received his diploma from the Cleveland Institute of Art in 1944. He then went on to receive his BFA from New York State College of Ceramics in 1946, and his MA from Ohio State University in 1948. He studied with Arthur Baggs in a newly formed ceramics program at Ohio State.
Lakofsky immediately went on to become a Professor of Art at Bowling Green State University, where he taught from 1948 to 1985. Lakofsky was one of the first ceramists to work with high fire translucent porcelain. In addition, he also used stoneware and earthenware clay bodies. His work is both thrown and hand built - often he combined the two techniques in the same piece. Lakofsky is known for his original glaze formulas and strict firing regimens.
Lakofsky's pottery has been shown in more than 250 local, national, and international exhibitions beginning in 1944. His work is also in the permanent collections of many museums and universities in the United States and Europe.
