Born in Columbus, Ohio in 1916, Kuehn graduated from CCAD in 1938. In 1939 he studied at the Art Students League with Hans Hoffman. While inspiring future artists as an instructor at CCAD, he also presented art to a broad audience as a curator and assistant director of the Columbus Museum of Art until he retired in 1976. Kuehn was responsible for bringing Picasso’s famous mural, “Guernica” to the museum in 1941 as part of a tour to raise money for the war effort.
Kuehn created a business lunch program at the museum to attract the business community to learn about the traveling exhibitions and the permanent collection, and he brought school children into the museum to introduce them to art.
Kuehn’s paintings resonate with the challenges the painter faces to reconcile a three-dimensional world onto a two-dimensional surface. His exquisite use of color and exploration of space results in art that offers aesthetic joy as well as the opportunity for analysis and discovery.
