| Jim Koudelka received his BFA from Ohio University and his MFA from Indiana University. With a love for ceramics, he became a Ceramics Professor and the Head of the Ceramics Department at the Oregon College of Art and Craft, where he taught for twenty five years. Before landing at the Oregon College of Art and Craft, Koudelka taught ceramics at Indiana University and Purdue University. His residency history includes The Archie Bray Foundation, Bullseye Glass, and the Oregon College of Art and Craft.
Koudalka's work has been featured in a variety of publications including Ceramics Monthly (featured six times) and N.C.E.C.A. Journal, among others. His work has been exhibited in numerous national and regional shows, receiving honors and awards, and his work is in collections nationwide.
"Strong Tea" was the beginning of a series of work that was based on Koudelka's interest in industrial objects such as oil cans, machinery, and other equipment. Through a combination of thrown, hand built, and molded clay forms, Koudelka created trompe l'oeil pieces that still had functional abilities. "Strong Tea" is made of stoneware clay fired to cone 10 in a salt kiln, with a glaze that mimics an old, worn, and weathered surface. |
