Hugh Kepets was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1946 and received Fine Arts degrees from Carnegie-Mellon University and Ohio University. He now lives and works in New York City.
Kepets is an artist intrigued by fragmented view of reality. Concentration on subjects like architecture and still life, he makes reality seem magical in his precise and patterned close-ups and sharply cropped compositions. Complicated and engaging, his works transform familiar objects into highly evocative abstractions.
Kepets has lived and worked in New York for the past three decades. Whether working in black and white or color, with traditional still life, nudes or architectural fragments, Kepets has always treated his subject matter as an intense inquiry into formal structure. Each object is reduced to its basic form: the three dimensional flattened to two dimensions and the intensity of detail restrained to basic essentials.
