Steven Kemenyffy was born in 1943 in Budapest, Hungary and immigrated to the United States in 1951. Susan was born in 1941 in Springfield, Massachusetts. They began working together as potters when they met in 1965 at the University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa. Both obtained their MFA in 1967 at the University of Iowa.
Living in Pennsylvania, Susan and Steven Kemenyffy collaborated in the true sense of the word in 1985. Both artists shared equal importance in creating their objects. Steven built the three-dimensional forms and when they are leather-hard, Susan created the surface images by drawing richly decorated female figures on the clay and then glazing them. The pieces were raku fired, buried in the ground to react with trapped smoke and gases.
