Masaya Imanishi was born in Japan in 1947 and He graduated from the Kyoto City University of Arts and then learned porcelain glazing from Kondo Y?z?. He was certified as a regular member of Nihon Kogeikai (The Japan Art Craft Association) in 1979.
After that Imanishi continued to create works at Akishino Kiln - a ceramics studio in Nara. In 1991, he studied modeling and ceramics in the United States as a trainee of the Japanese Government Overseas Study Program for Artists. During that time he made many works and held personal exhibitions and artist demonstrations at the Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts and various universities.
The theme for his works is “the energy of nature,” stemming from how he was deeply moved by his observations of nature in the United States. Examples include his “Seimei no Ki – Tree of Life,” which was inspired by giant trees in the United States, and “Indomitable,” which was based on large thistles. The “Sound of the Sea” series that Imanishi created was a result of the massive tsunami in Eastern Japan in 2011 and expresses the harshness of nature. Imanishi is known for his skill with porcelain, and his unique decorative swirls that grace his porcelain pieces.
Imanishi currently resides in Nara City, Japan, and still creates porcelain pieces at Akishino Kiln.
