Born in Philadelphia in 1944, Ian Hornak has become known for his realistic portraits and landscapes paintings. They say his art career began at nine, when he received a set of oil paints and a book of famous paintings. He immediately started to copy paintings by Raphael and Michelangelo. After earning a BFA from the University of Michigan, Hornak continued studying at Wayne State University to earn his MFA. In addition to creating his own artwork, Hornak taught both drawing and art history courses at Michigan colleges, Wayne State University and Henry Ford College.
He is frequently grouped with photo realists, although he explored a number of subject matters and styles including still life and flower paintings in the style of Dutch and Flemish masters. The process in which Hornak paints includes a combination of his own observations and the use of photographic references. His interest lies in the influences of light and shadow to create emotions.
