| When asked about his work, Michael Chipperfield said, “as my roots are in the tradition of pottery, the fact that these pieces are referential to vessels has an importance for me even though the primary concern remains that of form played against surface. For a long time I have been fascinated with the physical characteristics that are possible with clay. Although I have worked with many other materials, I’ve not found any others able to give the same satisfying response. As a result, where many of my present forms are rather severe, I’ve come to rely upon clay to supply some necessary warmth”.
