| William Brouillard proudly boasts of the fact that, though he is now in his early 60s, he still takes a fair amount of risks with his art. However, he admits that could just be a function of his self-diagnosed Attention Deficit Disorder. “I’m just not happy unless I’m working," Brouillard admits. “My wife Jessica will confirm that."
Brouillard grew up in rural Wisconsin, roughly 100 miles from Minneapolis. His high school had no art department and he had to hide his drawings under other pieces of paper to make it look like he was doing homework or he risked getting punished. Ironically, thanks to a particularly creative teacher, the punishment for goofing off in shop class, where he learned to make furniture and other useful objects, was to read poetry.
William Brouillard began his art education studying with John Perri at the State University of Wisconsin, at Menomonie, Wisconsin. After serving in the armed forces he returned to Wisconsin to study with Don Reitz at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He graduated from Alfred University in 1976, and then traveled to North Carolina where he was a resident craftsman and teacher at the Penland School.
William currently lives and works in Cleveland, Ohio. He has a studio in the old steel making district and has taught ceramics at The Cleveland Institute of Art for the last 31 years. In 2002, he was awarded a McKnight grant and traveled to Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he was a resident artist at the Northern Clay Center. At the end of his residency, he returned to Cleveland and resumed teaching at CIA. “I spend three days each week teaching at the Art Institute and the rest making pots and doing commission work in my Tremont studio." |
