Eugene Brands was born in Amsterdam in 1913. Eugene Brands was a self-taught artist, member of the Dutch Experimental Group “Reflex” and in international CoBrA movement; yet he belonged only briefly to this movement. After the infamous joint exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, in November 1949, he took leave of CoBrA and went on his own as an artist, following his very personal views.
Brands became interested music and ethnography, and many of the magical elements of these cultures; in which he tried to express these cultures in his work. In the 1950s Brands influenced by his toddler, Eugenie , he became interested in children's drawings.
