Carolyn Bradley was born September 22, 1898 in Richmond, Indiana. She graduated from Earlham College, John Herron Art School in Indianapolis and Escuela Universitaria de Bellas Artes at San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. As a visiting professor, she taught in the universities of Chile, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras and Coast Rica.
Primarily a watercolorist, Bradley was also devoted to teaching and encouraging art students in their work. Oftentimes on her trips to South America, due to scarcity, she would be asked by students where to buy art materials. Realizing the poverty of the area, she became involved in helping locate art supplies. In Guatemala, she accompanied a group to the mountains to get clay for color. “One kind made a beautiful red and another a smoke-blue,” she stated. In Honduras, Bradley used soot from a dirty cook-stove, mixing it with milk to make black.
Bradley taught at Ohio State University from 1932 until her death in 1954. Because of her educational trips to South America, she became known at Ohio State University as the paintbrush ambassador.
