| Gifford Beal was born in New York City and studied painting privately with William Merritt Chase. In 1900, he graduated from Princeton University, and went on to study at the Art Students League.
In 1922, Beal joined the swelling ranks of artist summering in New England. His painting contemporaries, like John Marin and Charles Kaelin, found inspiration in the rugged Eastern coastline. Beal found his inspiration in the people and scenes of Massachusetts, especially n the town of Rockport. After a period on Bearskin Neck, a home and studio was established on Atlantic Avenue with a spacious porch overlooking the harbor and Sandy Bay.
No matter what he was doing, Beal had an eye for subject matter. He was always working, always painting in his head, always planning for the next piece to come off of the easel.
