Charles Aydlett, an artist from Cincinnati, received both his MFA (1990) and his BFA (1984) from the New York College of Ceramics at Alfred University. All of his work is slab built earthenware pottery, with fine and colorful majolica glazes.
Aydlett states simply “I am working with the relationship of decoration to form. I want to see how the surface relates to the shape of the piece. Slab built forms give me an unlimited potential for form while Majolica glaze creates a white canvas. I always try to create continuity between the two and myself. My designs explain my inner soul while my hands convey this on to the viewer”.
“Merry-Go-Round Ride To Life” – the oval shape – the circle of life – the shape of the piece – the joy of the ride. This piece is a wonderful example of Aydlett’s earthenware shape influencing the exterior design that influences you, the viewer.
