Carmen Alvarez Feldman was born in Santurce, Puerto Rico in 1935. She studied in Puerto Rico, Buffalo, New York and Paris. She was married to the poet Irving Feldman and has one son, Fernando. Before concentrating on her sculpture she was a social worker in Puerto Rico.
Having been born in a strictly religious (Spanish Catholic) environment, she combines knowledge of the arts and the poetic influence from her husband to her work. She takes from the person she is modeling whatever are their defining figures, coercing these into the striking, sometime shocking, contours of her preferred bronzes. What drives Feldman is not the story behind a person’s life, but the inner spirit of her subject.
